Foreword The government of Thailand has been awared of the year 2000 problem since 1997, when the National Electronics and Computer Technolocy Center (NECTEC) started its campaign for Y2K actions for the public. Many private organizations started their Y2K conversion in 1997. Starting in April 1998, stronger actions by the cabinet took place through a series of orders to guarantee a speedy Y2K conversion in the country. This booklet gives a clear description of what has been done and how satisfactory progress was achieved in Thailand. Recognizing the fact that Y2K problem could not be eliminated in every IT and embedded systems everywhere, the Y2K National Coordination Committee (Y2K-NCC), carefully selected thirty-one organizations whose operations are so vital to the business continuity within the country and with the international communities. These private and public organizations are collectively called "Super-critical Organizations" where all vital systems must be renovated, tested and tested to become Y2K-ready unconditionally, and within the nominal dead line of June 30, 1999. Several monitoring and evaluation, including public disclosure of information from these organizations have been enforced. In additionl, all government ministries and departments are to be y2k-ready through the standard steps of AARVI/C*. In each government unit, full inventory checking of the impact of Y2K problems were reported and classified into three classes: super-critical, mission-critical and less-important. Through the classification and relaxed deadline for the "less-important" applications, all government agencies were confident of their resource management for handling the Y2K problem. They are fully responsible for the readiness of all super-critical and mission-critical systems within their agency. And the progress must be reported to the cabinet every month. Several important private-sector organizations have been under close supervision and control by government bodies such as the Bank of Thailand, the Securities Exchange Commission, etc. to make sure that the important industries and supply-chain companies are Y2K-ready. Several Y2k-readiness demonstration and announcements already took place. NECTEC and other leading organizations have been providing technical assistance to all government departments at every step of work. Through countless number of training and workshop programs were conducted for all 253 organizations and the private sector, We are now reaching the final stage of practicing contingency planning and perform final auditing on the Y2K conversion. It is expected that from October 1999 onward, there will be a series of industry-wide tests and declaration of Y2K-readiness; massive release of Citizen's Guidebook for the public version of Y2k-readiness; and the full preparation for additional assurance: the command and communication centers for the new year at all levels: national, regional and provincial.
