ABSTRACT -- A Geographic Information System (GIS) is not limited to be used in cartography only, but it has grown enormously across many disciplines and in numerous business sectors involved in map analysis. This article describes the uses of GIS in a variety of ways, such as agricultural production improvement, earthquake analysis, public transport management and urban transport planning. In Thailand, GIS also has been applied for decision supports in the fields of agriculture, route analysis, tax collection, and real estate affairs.

บทคัดย่อ -- ปัจจุบันระบบเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศภูมิศาสตร์ (Geographic Information System, GIS) ไม่ได้ถูกจำกัดการใช้งานเฉพาะในกิจกรรมที่มีการใช้แผนที่โดยตรงเท่านั้น หากแต่มีการนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ในกิจกรรมอื่นๆ ที่ต้องอาศัยแผนที่ในการวิเคราะห์ ดังนั้นบทความนี้จะขอนำเสนอตัวอย่างการประยุกต์ใช้ GIS กับงานด้านต่างๆ ได้แก่ การเพิ่มผลผลิตทางการเกษตร การวิเคราะห์และพยากรณ์ปรากฎการณ์แผ่นดินไหว การจัดการระบบขนส่งมวลชนและการวางการผังจราจร เป็นต้น สำหรับประเทศไทยเองก็มีการนำเทคโนโลยี GIS มาใช้เป็นเครื่องมือช่วยในการตัดสินใจในการปลูกข้าว วางแผนการเดินทาง ตลอดจนนำมาใช้กับงานด้านการจัดเก็บภาษี และงานด้านอสังหาริมทรัพย์ เป็นต้น
