ABSTRACT -- Widespread deployment of internetworking and object-oriented development paradigm is the factor that influences computer applications to have distributed nature. This paper is the first report on our research that finally aims at defining a computer technology model for the design and engineering of distributed applications in which several issues are of concern including system architecture, development technology, and quality aspects such as fault tolerance, security, and maintainability. With this model, we then expect to define a guideline for legacy enterprise systems to migrate to open and robust distributed systems with state-of-the-art technologies. In this paper, we start the research with the investigation on how far today's enterprise systems are from distributed systems in theory. The information system of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET-IS) is chosen as a case study and viewed from distributed system perspectives. The findings are that SET-IS is a legacy system that, to a certain extent, can be classified as a distributed system but several aspects of its operation can be enhanced to provide a more flexible reliable service.

บทคัดย่อ -- ความแพร่หลายในการใช้งานระบบเครือข่ายและการพัฒนาระบบงานโดยใช้เทคโนโลยีเชิงวัตถุเป็นปัจจัยที่ส่งเสริมให้ระบบงานคอมพิวเตอร์ในปัจจุบันมีลักษณะเป็นระบบกระจาย บทความนี้รายงานก้าวแรกของงานวิจัยซึ่งมีเป้าหมายสุดท้ายที่การกำหนดแบบจำลองทางเทคโนโลยีคอมพิวเตอร์เพื่อการออกแบบและพัฒนาระบบงานประยุกต์แบบกระจาย ซึ่งมีประเด็นต่างๆ ที่ต้องคำนึงถึงได้แก่ สถาปัตยกรรมของระบบ เทคโนโลยีการพัฒนาระบบ และแง่มุมที่เกี่ยวกับคุณภาพของระบบเช่น การทนต่อความผิดพร่อง ความมั่นคง และการบำรุงรักษาได้ง่าย โดยจากแบบจำลองที่ได้นี้ ผู้วิจัยจะได้กำหนดแนวทางในการปรับระบบวิสาหกิจดั้งเดิมที่มีอยู่ให้เป็นระบบกระจายที่มีลักษณะเปิดและทนทานโดยใช้เทคโนโลยีที่ทันสมัยต่อไป บทความนี้กล่าวถึงจุดเริ่มต้นของงานวิจัย โดยทำการพิจารณาว่าระบบวิสาหกิจในปัจจุบันมีความแตกต่างจากระบบกระจายในทฤษฎีมากน้อยเพียงใด โดยใช้ระบบสารสนเทศของตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทยเป็นกรณีศึกษา ผลของการศึกษาพบว่าระบบสารสนเทศของตลาดหลักทรัพย์แห่งประเทศไทยเป็นระบบดั้งเดิมซึ่งจัดได้ว่าเป็นระบบกระจาย แต่ลักษณะการทำงานในหลายแง่มุมยังสามารถปรับเพิ่มเพื่อให้สามารถให้บริการที่ยืดหยุ่นและเชื่อถือได้มากขึ้น
