Abstract<\/h4>

As you may know that implants constitute a major element of today\u2019s health care delivery systems. Over the last ten years or so, we have seen emergence of a new class of implants that have additional functionalities by virtue of being provided with a power source, logic and micro or nano – actuators and sensors.<\/p>

This is the next generation of implants and promises to revolutionize health care delivery. Much of the initial development that is being carried out throughout the world (mainly USA, Europe and Japan, to my knowledge) is proprietary, so it is difficult for the unaffiliated expert to gain adequate knowledge of the state of the art in this field. Patents and patent applications are generally the only source of information and that is necessarily incomplete. The situation is beginning to change, with NIH is USA beginning to fund more of this research. Active implants may easily be serviced by telemedicine networks, further changing the landscape of health care delivery at home.<\/p>

This forum will provide the opportunities for researchers to discuss and express their ideas whether we should adopt this area of technology as an area of technology focus for our country.<\/p>
