TURGOR MOVEMENTS

Some kinds of plant movements are based on reversible changes in the turgor pressure (defined as the pressure within a cell resulting from the movement of water into the cell) of specific cells, rather than on differential growth or cell enlargement. One of the most familiar of these has to do with the changing patterns of leaf position that certain plants exhibit at night and in the day. For example, the attractively spotted leaves of the prayer plant (Maranta) spreas horizontally during the day but become more or less vertical at night.
