Thigmotropism

Still another response of plants that is commonly observed is thigmotropism, a name derived from the Greek root thigma, meaning “touch.” Thigmotropism is defined as the response of plants to touch.

The reponses by which tendrils curl around and cling to stems or other objects are surprisingly rapid and clear ; the ways in xhich twining plants such as bindweed coil aroundd objects are analogous.
This behavior is the result of rapid growth responses to touch. Specialized groups of cell in the epidermis appear to be concerned with thigmotropic reactions, but again, their exact mode of action is not well understood.
