Agricultural Data Integration and Zoning Optimization Modeling: What2Grow

About What2Grow

The National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC) under National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) was given approval for the budget on researching and developing “Agricultural Data Integration and Zoning Optimization Modeling Project”. The project aims to research and develop a tool, which helps integrating data related to selection of agricultural land suitability from both public and private organizations. The data include information on agricultural usages of lands, economic data on prices, buyers, supplies and demands, tools for creating mathematical models and advanced technology on big data analysis. The purpose is to create a model, which suggests alternative plants for farmers to help them make more profits. In the fiscal year 2015, the first phase of the project is operated in one province: Kampaengphet. And in the fiscal year 2016, it is operated in 16 other provinces and the system will be developed so that it covers all areas in the country; the system is called “What2Grow”, consisting of:

  1. Zoning Optimization Modeling
  2. Agricultural Information Resources
  3. Weather Stations

Benefit

Agricultural Data Integration and Zoning Optimization Modeling Project has developed the tools and models of Kampaengphet, the pilot province, already in 2015. The system is called “What2Grow” and consists of:

  • Alternative Plants Suggesting Model: providing information in sub-district layer. It can identify agricultural areas with suitable and unsuitable soil, agricultural areas likely to produce profits or loss, the details on agricultural areas, which currently produces loss or has unsuitable soil for cultivation. This results in 230,000 Rai of alternating from rice to cultivating sugar cane and 230,000 Rai of alternating to cultivating cassava.
  • Agricultural Information Resources : an educational media to increase efficiency of economic plants cultivation in 3 topics: how to increase efficiency and decrease cost in rice agriculture, techniques on how to gain profit from cultivating cassava, and follow the footsteps of volunteering soil experts. Several self-learning supporting tools are also developed.
  • Weather Stations : 15 stations have been installed in order to cover the whole areas of Kampaengphet province. Each station consists of electronic devices, sensors, and communication system for monitoring fieldwork weather data from long distance. It can also monitor meteorological data.

Specification

Computers and smart devices with Internet.
